500 Festival Parade To Air On ESPN In 2003
ESPN Television Networks will broadcast the 2003 Indy 500 Race Preview Show from the 500 Festival Parade, festival officials announced Oct. 16. "This is a memorable day in the parade's history," said Mary Clare Broadbent, 500 Festival chairman of the board. "Partnering with ESPN will allow us to showcase the spectacle and excitement of the month of May in Indy to motorsports fans throughout the world." ESPN, a multinational, multimedia sports entertainment company with six domestic and 19 international TV networks, will broadcast the race preview show from the parade site live on the domestic network to approximately 88 million households across the nation from 1-2:30 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday, May 24, 2003. The ESPN broadcast will give the parade a particularly strong link to the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. It will be hosted by Indianapolis 500 announcers and will include interviews with drivers, pre-race analysis and footage from practice and qualifying runs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The broadcast, which will be produced by IMS Productions, will highlight the entire menu of community activities the 500 Festival plays host to each May, including Community Day, Kids' Day, the Mini Marathon and the Princess Program. The last time the 500 Festival Parade was broadcast nationally was in 1997. The 500 Festival, a not-for-profit volunteer organization, was created in 1957 to organize civic events celebrating the Indianapolis 500, the greatest race in the world. The mission of the 500 Festival is to produce events and programs that celebrate the success of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Indiana and their guests. These events and programs, produced largely by volunteers, enhance the image of Indianapolis and Indiana by showcasing their cultural, educational, and social benefits to the world. Thousands of volunteers help produce 500 Festival events. With annual participation of more than 400,000 people from around Indiana and the world, it has grown to be one of the nation's largest festivals.
