IU, Purdue bands' flawed collaboration in 1947
My grandfather was (long ago) in the Indiana University band, and he told me over the weekend that in 1947 the IU band and Purdue band were at the "500" and at one point were to perform the Star-Spangled Banner in tandem. My grandfather said that the bands had failed to communicate prior to the performance, and as a result one of the bands began playing the song in the key of A-flat while the other band started playing in the key of B-flat. He said that while the resulting cacophony made the problem immediately obvious, neither band would adjust, and thus the bands played out the song in different keys!
