 1977, A YEAR FULL OF FIRSTS My name is Steve Phillips, and I reside in Greenfield, Indiana, a small community 15 miles east of Indianapolis. I've been attending the Indianapolis 500 every year since 1976, but no year stands out in my memory like 1977. As many of us know, A. J. Foyt became the first four time winner of the race that year. That year also saw the first 200 mile per hour lap turned by Tom Sneva, and also Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify and race in the 500. Sadly, 1977 also marked the last year Tony Hulman ever witnessed a 500 at the place he purchased in 1945. Mr. Hulman will always be remembered for making the 500 what it is today and also for setting the standard for what a true gentleman and professional businessman truly is. There have been many good years and good drivers come and go at this famous track, but there may never be another year like 1977. STEVE PHILLIPS

I remember that year so well. There will never be another like it. All the open wheeled stars, so many different chassis, so many different engines.
