The 500 Festival Princesses and Queen play an integral role at the Indianapolis 500 and during the month of May in Indianapolis.

The 2006 500 Festival Princess Program application is available and may be submitted online via the Festival's Web site, www.500festival.com.

The 500 Festival will interview entrants from across the state of Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 21, narrowing the selection to 66 women. The judges then will conduct second-round interviews Saturday, Jan. 28, selecting the final 33 to serve as ambassadors to the 2006 500 Festival.

Princesses will participate in statewide outreach programs, including visits to hospitals, schools, nursing homes and media outlets, among others leading up to the month of May. One princess will be chosen to serve as the 500 Festival Queen. The queen and princesses also will participate in the pre-race ceremonies of the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 28.

Each princess will receive business and formal wear for various 500 Festival appearances, casual attire compliments of Finish Line and a tiara and custom-made jewelry from program sponsor G. Thrapp Jewelers. In addition, the 500 Festival Queen, to be crowned May 20 at the 500 Festival Mayors Breakfast at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The 500 Festival Princess Program is also supported through a sponsorship by WTHR-TV13.

Applicants must be between the ages of 19 and 23, single and legal residents of Indiana. Candidates also must be full-time students in a fully accredited Indiana college or university and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

These events and programs, produced largely by volunteers, enhance the image of the city and state by showcasing their cultural, educational, and social benefits to the world.

The 500 Festival was created in 1957 to organize civic events celebrating the Indianapolis 500. It is a not-for-profit organization supported by corporate sponsorships, memberships and ticket sales. More than 7,000 volunteers help produce 500 Festival events. With annual participation of approximately 425,000 people from around Indiana and the world, it has grown to be one of the largest festivals in the nation.
