Two-Time Indy 500 Winner Castroneves Honored As Top Racer

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was honored as Auto Racer of the Year during Univision's inaugural Premios Deportes Awards in Pasadena, Calif.

Team Penske's Helio Castroneves was named Auto Racer of the Year during Univision's inaugural Premios Deportes Awards, which were taped July 14 in Pasadena, Calif., for broadcast July 20 on Univision.

A short time later, Castroneves returned to the stage to present the All-Star Soccer Team of the Year Award.

The Premios Deportes Awards were created to honor Latin athletes and their talent, perseverance, and character; as well as their impact on the Latin Community. Nominees were selected by a panel of current and former professional athletes and sports writers.

IndyCar Series driver Milka Duno and 2000 Indianapolis 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya also were nominated in the Auto Racer of the Year category.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized by the Latin community for my contribution to the sports world," said Castroneves, the two-time Indianapolis 500 champion who is second in the IndyCar Series championship standings. "Being from Brazil, the Latin community in the United States is a tremendously important part of my life. To be considered one of the top Latin drivers competing in America is something I'm very proud of."

On July 16, Castroneves will be a presenter of the Female International Athlete of the Year Award at the 16th ESPYs in Los Angeles. The show, hosted by Justin Timberlake, will be broadcast at 9 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.

Castroneves also will be a correspondent for Entertainment Tonight, reporting from the red carpet and behind the scenes of the Nokia Theater. He will tape a segment with professional snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, which features the pair as they highlight the gift bags that ESPY nominees and presenters will be receiving.

IndyCar Series drivers Danica Patrick (Best Moment, Best Female Athlete) and Scott Dixon (Best Driver) are nominated for ESPYs. Patrick also will co-present the Best Upset award.
